The Principality's sunny terrace

High above the Rhine valley, like an eagle’s nest, lies the Walser municipality of Triesenberg. Liechtenstein’s sun terrace is the highest and largest municipality in terms of surface area.

Triesenberg is a village with a rich history: around 1280, the Walser settled in the area. In 1355, a Walser settlement is mentioned for the first time, probably already in the second generation; Romansh toponyms attest to an earlier settlement. This heritage can still be found everywhere today. The parish church of St Joseph was built in the hamlet of Üenaboda (1767-69), which has since become the centre of the municipality. The locals are proud of their Walser origins and speak a well-preserved Walser dialect. The dialect of Triesenberg belongs to Höchstalemannisch, i.e. the southernmost Alemannic. This Alemannic is still mainly spoken in Upper Valais, but also in other Walser regions. About 2,660 people live in Triesenberg. The community’s greatest asset is its unspoilt nature. At 700-2,000 metres above sea level, the municipal area offers everything the heart desires. The variety of the landscape and the views over the Rhine valley and into the distance are fascinating. Winter sports enthusiasts will also be delighted. In Steg and Malbun you will find attractive sports facilities. Triesenberg is not a location for large industrial or service companies. The strengths of the mountain community are an attractive residential community and a strong local trade offering training and employment. As a local recreational area for Liechtenstein and the region, gentle and sustainable tourism is becoming increasingly important.
