The project started in 2023 as an offshoot of the network of the most beautiful Villages in Switzerland. This programme is partnered with the Austrian network of Small historic Towns. To be accepted, the municipality must have fewer than 25,000 inhabitants and a clearly defined historic centre of national importance. At least one museum, entrance tower or part of an old defensive wall must be present. Authenticity and the historical aspect are also fundamental criteria.
