Rossinière

A timeless village

Discover an exceptional heritage. The carved wooden chalets of this village invite you on a journey back in time. Admire the façade of the Grand Chalet, home of the painter Balthus, and visit the chapel dedicated to him.

Rossinière was first mentioned in 1115 and has been part of the County of Gruyère since its inception. At that time, the village belonged to the castellany of Oex. After the bankruptcy of the last Count of Gruyère, the village came under the rule of the Bernese. They established a municipal administration and left their mark on the construction of the Town Hall in 1635 and the rectory in 1774. In 1645, the Bernese government ordered the reconstruction of the parish church, which had been destroyed by a storm. All this rich architectural heritage is showcased through events and festivals that alternate each year, such as the Kingdom of Cats, exhibitions by artists and craftspeople, conferences and presentations by professors and students from the EPFL, not to mention the now unmissable Christmas Market. The village becomes a veritable ‘open stage’, providing an extraordinary setting for the works on display. The municipal authorities and regional and tourist stakeholders have recognised the potential of Rossinière, an authentic and lively village where mountain farming, crafts and local traditions coexist with the worlds of art, culture and architecture. These contacts and collaborations with the outside world, particularly with universities, enable the municipality to move forward with a variety of projects, strengthening its tourist offering, but also with projects related to energy, construction and the environment, thereby developing the economic tissue and promoting local expertise.
