Planken

Village in the Principality with a Walser soul

It is a municipality rich in history and tradition, situated in the picturesque mountain landscape of Liechtenstein. Its roots go back to the late 13th century, when families from the Valais decided to settle in the area.

These pioneers began to cultivate and develop the region, giving rise to a community that still today retains strong ties to its origins. However, it is believed that even before the arrival of these settlers, the mountain pastures had already been used and exploited by Romansh-speaking populations from nearby Schaan and Vaduz. One element supporting this hypothesis is the toponym ‘Planken’, which derives from the Romansh word ‘plaunca’, the meaning of which can be interpreted as ‘slope’. This name reflects not only the geography of the place, but also its ancient history, testifying to an interaction between different cultures over the centuries. The first documented mention of Planken dates back to 1361, when the name appears in a contract, a sign that the village had already existed as an organised entity for some time. In 1869, a dramatic event deeply marked the history of the municipality: a large fire devastated the centre of the village, causing severe damage. This was only a year after the completion of the road connection to the valley below, an infrastructure that had greatly improved living conditions for mountain farmers, making it easier to transport goods and access the rest of the village. Today, Planken is located on a large sun terrace that extends below the Dreischwestern massif, offering breathtaking panoramic views. With around 400 inhabitants, it is the smallest municipality in the Principality of Liechtenstein, but this does not diminish its charm. On the contrary, Planken is considered a great place to live, attracting people of all ages thanks to its unique character. The village offers a perfect balance between tranquillity and modernity. Family-friendly facilities, leisure opportunities suitable for both young and old, and warm interaction between residents make Planken a welcoming and dynamic community. Added to this are the beauty of the surrounding landscape and the serene character of the village, which retains a contemporary spirit without losing its connection to the past. Planken is more than just a place to stay: it is a space in which to make memories, have authentic experiences and feel truly at home.
