The village looks like something out of a fairy tale, with its castle perched on the hill, paved streets and historic houses that tell centuries of history.

Situated in an extraordinarily panoramic position, this enchanting medieval village is known not only for its fascinating architecture, but also for the timeless atmosphere that you can breathe while strolling within its walls. Once ruled by the Counts of Gruyères, the village maintained its independence until 1554, when economic difficulties forced the last count to cede his domains to Bern and Fribourg. Despite the political changes, the heart of the village remained intact, preserving its medieval character with the ancient walls and ramparts built in the 15th century to defend the town. Even today you can admire the majestic Chupia-Bârba tower to the south and the evocative Le Belluard barbican to the north, evidence of its strategic importance. The castle, built in the 12th century and enlarged in 1480, dominates the landscape with its imposing structure. Inside, in addition to elegant rooms and a breathtaking view of the surrounding valley, there is the chapel of St John the Baptist, famous for its refined 15th-century stained glass windows, which create a unique atmosphere. The church of St Theodule, with its characteristic bell tower and the nave renovated in the 19th century, is also a point of reference for those visiting the village. The charm of Gruyères can also be found in its historic houses, dating from the 15th to 17th centuries, which contribute to creating a rare architectural harmony. Among these, the Casa del Chalamala stands out, dedicated to a famous court jester who lived in the 16th century. The village also has small details that reveal its most authentic soul, such as the Calvary of 1705, a symbol of the community’s religious devotion, and the ancient Carthusian monastery of La Part-Dieu, founded in 1307 and still visible today with its vast building and church. Today, Gruyères is much more than a well-preserved medieval village: it is a place that enchants visitors with its history, its beauty and, of course, its famous cheese. Strolling through its streets is like stepping back in time, among craft shops, typical restaurants and breathtaking views that make for an unforgettable experience.
