Grüningen
Zurich's countryside
This charming country village welcomes visitors with its enchanting landscape, three museums steeped in history, a lush botanical garden and idyllic views that seem to have stepped out of a painting.
The varied natural landscape, ranging from the hills to the surrounding forests, offers a perfect setting for a relaxing stroll. The traditions of the place can also be experienced through the spring market and the bailiff’s market in the autumn, events that are real attractions and invite you to linger to breathe in the village’s unique atmosphere and enjoy what it has to offer. The main road through the heart of the village is short, but walking along it is only the beginning of a fascinating experience. Taking the time to wander through the alleys and hidden squares, one discovers corners rich in history and beauty. Small as it is, Grüningen harbours a surprising wealth of architectural treasures that go far beyond appearances. When approaching the village from the north, one is greeted by the breathtaking view of the row of houses lining the street, with the castle and church standing out solemnly, creating an almost photographic image. This panoramic view of the village gives an impression of serenity and beauty. The majestic stone houses lining the street, the half-timbered buildings telling stories of times gone by, the Baroque arches adorning the squares and hidden side alleys are all elements that make the village unique. Every corner, every fountain seems to tell a story, like a little piece of paradise that resists the passage of time. Grüningen Castle is the beating heart of the village, a symbol that defines its identity. With its dominant position in the ‘Stedtli’, the castle offers a spectacular view of the village and frames it in an unforgettable way. Its old rooms, recently renovated, shine with new splendour, while retaining their original charm and old character. Each room is a little gem, where the traditional style and historical substance have been preserved with great sensitivity and care during the renovation. Another pearl of Grüningen is its botanical garden, which was created through a private initiative and founded by the Zürcher Kantonalbank in 1987. This green space is an oasis of biodiversity, managed according to the principles of ecology and conservation. Here, visitors can discover an extraordinary variety of plants, from local to exotic species, and learn more about the diversity of the plant world. The garden, which is open from 1 April to 31 October, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, is a great place to relax and reflect. Admission is free, allowing anyone to enjoy the beauty of this garden that is as educational as it is rejuvenating for the soul.
