The geranium village

Grimentz, a charming village in Val d’Anniviers, captivates with its extraordinary state of preservation. It winds along a narrow main street lined with wooden and brick houses, barns and haylofts that embody the typical architecture of the valley.

Situated on the left bank of the Gougra, Grimentz boasts an ancient and fascinating history. Before 1052 it was known as Grimiens, while its original German name was Grimensi. Near the village to the southwest, rock carving complexes and cuppelliform stones have been discovered, evidence of a human presence dating back thousands of years. From the Middle Ages onward, Grimentz shared the fate of the Anniviers valley, coming under the control of several families and lordships, including the Bishop of Sion, the Counts de Granges and the von Raron. In 1243 it was the first village in the valley to form itself into a commune, marking an important milestone in its administrative autonomy. Religiously, Grimentz depended on the parish of Anniviers until 1798, when it became a rectory and finally an autonomous parish in 1933. Among its religious buildings are the parish church, rebuilt in 1951, and the chapel of St. Theodul, dating from the 17th century. Further evidence of its spiritual heritage is the Way of the Cross leading to the chapel of Les Meyes, dedicated to Our Lady of the Roses.
Until the early 20th century, Grimentz’s economy was based on mountain agriculture, with the pastures of Avoin, Moiry and Torrent populated by the Hérens breed. Since 1960, however, tourism has transformed the village, supported in part by the construction of the Moiry dam in 1957.
Today Grimentz, along with Ayer, Chandolin, Saint-Jean, Saint-Luc and Vissoie, is part of the municipality of Anniviers. This alpine gem combines tradition and modernity, offering visitors an authentic experience and a dive into the history of the Anniviers valley.
