The Heritage Village

A characteristic Alpine village in the Val d’Hérens, it enchants with its authentic and well-preserved charm. Among its narrow streets are traditional wooden or terracotta houses, characterised by stone-framed doors and windows and façades decorated with frescoes.

The name Evolène, which means ‘easy water’ in dialect, refers both to the municipality’s main village and to a stream that flows from it. This connection to water is intertwined with a history that has its roots in the 14th century. One example is the 1369 treaty between the inhabitants of Evolène and those of Valpelline, in the Aosta Valley, dating back to a time when trade crossed the Collon Pass. Until the 20th century, the community of Evolène was self-sufficient, producing everything necessary for its livelihood, but the arrival of tourism in the 19th century breathed new life into the region. Today, Evolène is the beating heart of the municipality, with almost 800 inhabitants, a lively central street full of shops and restaurants, and an atmosphere that celebrates tradition and hospitality. The village buildings, built in stone and wood, reflect an architecture rooted in rural life, blending perfectly with the surrounding mountain landscape. At the centre of the village is the parish church dedicated to St John the Baptist, whose patron saint is celebrated every year on 24 June. Evolène is not just a place, but an experience that combines nature, culture and traditions. Among the most popular events are the atmospheric Carnival and the Midsummer Festival, which bring together inhabitants and visitors in celebrations that tell of the living soul of this beautiful Alpine community. In the surrounding area, one can discover the Cotter alpine pasture, a typical example of rural life in the valley.
