Ernen
The Cardinal's village
Formerly the capital of the Conches valley, Ernen is one of the most interesting villages in the Valais due to the variety of its houses dating from the 15th, 17th and 18th centuries. The Catholic parish church of St. George was built in 1510-18 by Ulrich Ruffiner on the site of an 11th century three-apse church.
Ernen is one of the 12 municipalities of Goms and has 530 inhabitants. It is located on the left side of the Rhone Valley, nestled in the Alpine mountain world at 1,200 metres above sea level. Since the merger in spring 2005, its territory consists of the former municipalities of Ausserbinn, Ernen, Mühlebach and Steinhaus. The hamlet of Niederernen has also belonged to the community of Ernen since 1872. Ernen was awarded the Henry-Louis-Wakker Prize in 1979 for its particularly beautiful and well-preserved landscape. The three village landscapes of national importance are exceptional. Mühlebach is home to the oldest timber settlement in Switzerland. Also worth seeing is St. George’s Church, built between 1510 and 1518. In Ernen, time seems to stand still, yet neither residents nor holidaymakers need to forego the comforts of modern life that are now taken for granted. Cable TV and internet are a matter of course, as are good daily necessities. A special experience are the concerts in the music village. Ernen is part of the landscape park, a ‘regional nature park of national importance’. If, in summer, you find your way back to the village after a hike through the beautiful Alpine world, you can end the day with a visit to a classical music concert in the baroque church, you can indulge yourself in one of the restaurants or sit comfortably in the garden and enjoy the beautiful Alpine world.
