Diessenhofen

Guarding the great river

The picturesque town lies between Schaffhausen and Stein am Rhein, along one of Europe’s most beautiful river landscapes. A boat trip on the Rhine, through a largely untouched landscape, under the covered wooden bridge in Diessenhofen, along green hills with vineyards and castles is a special experience.

The small Rhine town of Diessenhofen, located far from the large tourist streams, invites visitors to discover quiet corners and places. The town shows itself in its original medieval structure, still preserved today. The main street passes under the arch of the seal tower. The aim of the authorities is to make the main street west and east of the Seal Tower a meeting place where road users on foot and on the move treat each other with consideration and respect. The origins of the town date back to 757. The covered wooden bridge over the Rhine was built in 1814 and is the lifeline between the villages of Gailingen and Diessenhofen. The bridge superstructure was renovated in 1996 and in 1997, the renovation of the yoke posts was completed in 2002. The former Dominican convent of St. Katharinental is a quarter of an hour’s drive to Paradise, directly on the Rhine. It can easily be reached on foot along an idyllic path. Even if the exterior does not suggest it, the interior of the monastery church can be considered one of the most beautiful late baroque creations in Switzerland. Today, the monastery complex serves as a cantonal rehabilitation clinic as well as a rest and nursing home. Unterhof Castle is located directly at the landing stage of the Untersee and Rhine shipping company. The beautifully located garden restaurant lies directly on the Rhine under shady trees and invites cyclists, hikers and tourists to linger. The permanent art exhibition in the upper office building shows the large and comprehensive work of Swiss painter and mosaicist Carl Roesch.
