Bergün

The railway village

This is a typical Engadin village. The Platzturm, originally a farm tower (12th century), towers above the roofs of the village with its 17th century Baroque dome.

Bergün is a typical Graubünden village at 1,373 m above sea level. The houses are lined up on both sides of the Dorfstrasse, the windows and sgraffito facades face the street, where passing traffic, trade and communication take place. The mountain village is located on the famous RhB Albula-Berninaline, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which offers an unforgettable experience with spectacular viaducts and loop tunnels. Rail fans can also discover more about the history of the Rhaetian Railway in the Albula Railway Museum. Finds from the Bronze Age, a cup stone at Crap Alv and various other finds suggest that Bergün and the pass crossing have been used since ancient times. One of the earliest dates of which we have information is 1188, the year the village church was built. The square tower ‘La tuor’ dominates the village, but little is known about the construction of the Roman tower: built as an escape and defence tower, it was even turned into a prison at the time of the construction of the railway. In 1323, it burnt down with the entire village up to the walls. Not to be missed in winter are the famous toboggan runs, which descend a good 400 metres from Preda to Bergün, providing unforgettable memories and offering incredible views of the snow-covered mountains and surrounding villages.
